Fruit flies are among the most familiar types of pests that homeowners see. Just one or two making themselves at home among browning bananas on the counter can quickly give rise to an entire fruit fly civilization that will infest every corner of the kitchen. The transfer of these technologies assists Member States in the implementation of national or regional (transboundary) area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programmes against major insect pests such as fruit flies, moths, tsetse flies, screwworm flies and mosquitoes.

The successful implementation of area-wide pest management programmes integrating the use of sterile insects with other control technologies against a number of key plant, veterinary, and medical insect pests, such as various species of fruit flies, moths, screwworms, tsetse flies and, more recently, disease-transmitting mosquitoes, clearly demonstrates a peaceful application of nuclear technology. Pablo Montoya is an expert on the use of Biological Control by Augmentation and the application of the Sterile Insect Technique against fruit fly pests, with over 60 published papers in scientific journals. He is a researcher and head of the Unit of Methods Development in the Mexican Program against Fruit Flies – photospace.sitecturer: CRC Press.

There are also some areas that are free from pest fruit flies and are maintained free from fruit flies using area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) principles. In addition to these, Australian horticultural production, as a whole, is at risk from Cited by:

Feb 28,  · The goal of the Fruit Fly Area-wide Pest Management (AWPM) program is to develop and integrate biologically based pest management approaches that will result in area-wide suppression and control of fruit flies throughout selected agricultural areas of Hawaii using technologies including: 1) field sanitation, 2) protein bait sprays and/or traps.

Tips for Control. The key to controlling fruit flies is finding the breeding sites and removing them by proper cleaning practices. Fruit flies, like other types of small flies, can be difficult to totally eliminate because they can breed in such small amounts of organic matter.

Nov 16,  · Area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) is a coordinated, sustainable and preventive approach that targets entire pest populations. It aims at integrating environment-friendly control measures such as the Sterile Insect Technique, to reduce losses and insecticide use, and to facilitate the expansion of international agricultural trade, while minimizing the further global spread of.
